Chapter Twenty-Seven

Pascal

Ramzi’s kitten is asleep on my chest.

I can’t move without disturbing him and every time I do the little shit sinks his claws into my bare skin to remind me who is in charge.

I sigh as I try to flick out the corner of the blanket that’s lodged around my knee. My foot is cold and it would be nice if I could cover it. The fluffy dictator opens one yellow eye and freezes me in place.

Shit.

“Go back to sleep,” I whisper.

The eye squints shut and he starts to purr. It’s loud but not anywhere near as loud as his yowl when he isn’t getting his way. I rub the velveteen tip of his ear between my fingers. “You’re a spoiled little jerk, aren’t you?”

No response.

“Finally.” I tuck a hand under my head. The couch is a bit on the small side, but it’s not that uncomfortable. I’ve slept on it before when Mom has come to visit. Just makes sense to chuck new sheets on the bed for her and camp out in the living room when I get home from work so late and often don’t sleep much anyway.

But I’m a special kind of antsy tonight. Things didn’t go as usual at the bar. There was a big brawl on the dance floor.

It’s not that, though, that has me ready to come out of my skin.

Wanting to knock on Ramzi’s door, and when she opens it, kiss her senseless; that’s my issue right now. I know she didn’t hear me when I said the words out loud, but it’s like acknowledging my feelings… verbalizing them… knowing how close she is… the way that I want her… every part of her… all the time… and knowing whatever we are right now, she isn’t ready for more… it’s killing me.

That’s why I can’t sleep. It’s why I keep staring at that sliver of light under her door. It’s why I’m fighting to keep my body relaxed and on this couch when where I really want to be is in there with her. My muscles twitch as I attempt to settle more firmly into the cushions.

The kitten must sense that I’m close to failing, because he needles me with his murder mittens.

I blow out a laborious breath. “Quit it, you little demon.”

He needles me more. Purrs more.

The light under her door stays on.

I’m in love with her. She’s not over him.

That light is still on.

I’m in love with her. She’s not over him.

She doesn’t sleep with the light on. Not once in the whole time she’s lived here. Why hasn’t she turned it off yet? Is it because her head hurts? Or because she can’t sleep? Or because… she wants me to notice?

I’m in love with her. She’s not over him.

It’s past three now. The cat has stopped pricking my chest with his claws. He snores loud for something so tiny. Like wake up the dead loud. It’d make a good white noise loop. And still I can’t shut off my brain.
